The
Roman Empire
From
a small settlement at the river Tiber to an Empire that
ruled orient and occident for half a millenium - that is
the story of Ancient Rome.
The
rulers, the "Caesars" were coldblooded and calculating
like Augustus, art lovers and poets like Hadrian, scandalous
and infamous like Caligula.
It
is an era marked by the cruelties of war and the submission
of numerous peoples as well as by extraordinary achievements
in art, architecture and literature.
An
empire full of contrasts and contradictions: an efficiently
organized state and army undermined by corruption, mercyless
exploitation and slavery coexisting with breathtaking luxury
and unlimited decadence.
Panem
et circensis -- bread and games -- gladiator fights and
chariot races held this society together.
And
finally: the coming of christianity. The Roman Empire was
the first world power to embrace christianity as its state
religion.
Nowadays
the traditions of Ancient Rome are ubiquitous in the European
cultur. They can be found in architecture, the calender
and the law-system to name but a few. Thus the heritage
of the Roman Empire stays alive through the millenia.
